It is that time of year again to start thinking about The Student Outdoor Educators Conference being held this year by Vermilion Community College in Ely, Minnesota. Living and going to school in Ely, MN has a lot of perks. We have the Boundary Waters in our back yard, the International Wolf Center and North American Bear Center on either end of town, thousand miles of trails, many great opportunities that are as unique as we are. We are so excited to have the opportunity to share all of this with you at this year’s SOEC.
At this year’s SOEC you can expect to find an adventure unlike any other. All starting with, the One Pot Wonder Cook Off, Friday night from 6-9pm. We will provide the firewood. This will be dinner on Friday night! Make sure you bring your best trail hardened recipe. Prizes will be given in different categories, so be creative! Check in and mingle under the stars! Meet new friends over a bowl of homemade grub.
Saturday is going to be chalk full of everything that is expected, and a few things that are not, of the SOEC. The day will start with Student Presentations, fantastic Ely cooked food, exploring in and around the Ely area via tours to the International Wolf Center, Bear Center, local hikes and paddles, and walks around town to just name a few. If that wasn’t enough excitement the day will conclude with a key note panel featuring Jasper Hunt, Tyler Fish, Bill Rom, and others to be determined soon. After we give out some awesome prizes that night The Crazy Neighbors will “bluegrass out” live.
We hope that you will help us make this year’s SOEC all that it can be by joining us on April 20th-22nd. We hope to see you all there!

Here's what students have to say about SOEC
I attended SOEC for a learning opportunity, and for the experience of talking to other outdoor education students. What I
gained from the conference was the different activities people can involve themselves mentally and physically in the outdoors.
I am looking forward to presenting this year and meeting new people.

The SOEC is a fun weekend you can learn a lot from other outdoors leaders and their perspective on outdoor education.

I have attended the last two Student Outdoor Educator conferences and I look forward to my third one. These conferences are
what I look forward to every April. It is a chance to see faces both new and old, learn from my pears, and gain new
insight on what other schools are doing for our field. This conference has shown me the path that I want to take to
reach my dreams and goals of the future. It is a great time to chat with other students and hear what they are
passionate about, as well as a chance to learn from others.
As a presenter both years I have been able to share my passion for the outdoors with others and have inspired many people to do the same. I have presented on buying your own outdoor gear, and on a class that I took in high school that is promoting Outdoor Education in a formal setting. Presenting is a chance to help you share what you love with others and break your fear of public speaking. I hope to see you at this year’s conference in Duluth, MN.
